Beach Party Mania

The History Channel notes today as the day Disney Legend Annette Funicello's first Beach movie, Beach Party, opened. Take home a video or DVD of one of these iconic beach-party films and re-live the sunny days of early-to-mid-60s beach-party mania. Look for Annette Funicello movies and CDs in the collections of the Glenview Public Library and other CCS libraries in the Library catalog.

Frog Town

Glenview, by local author Beverly Roberts Dawson, is a small book brimming with black and white photos of early Glenview. Recalling the area's marshy terrain, the author notes in her introduction, "By the beginning of the 20th century, the swampy area upon which early Glenview businesses and residences were built was called "frog town"; it extended north to present-day Glenview Road, west to the railroad tracks, east to Waukegan Road, and south to the Carriage Hill townhomes. Some owners of houses along Glenview Road, as well as Dewes and Prairie Streets, had to build small wooden bridges between their residences and the street." Photographs include portraits of Glenview's founding families and shots of early businesses, including the popular Dairy Bar. Glenview Subdivision on List of Endangered Buildings

Landmarks Illinois, a non-profit preservation group, recently released its seventh annual list of significant historical buildings that are in danger of demolition or substantial alteration. The Park Subdivision in Glenview was built in the 1890s by the Swedenborgian Church of New Jerusalem, consisting of a church on 10 acres with buildable lots for its members. According to an article in the Chicago Tribune (9/19/08) the church can no longer afford afford to pay taxes on the homes. Read the full report on the thirteen endangered sites here.

Every year at midnight on September 15, the president of Mexico shouts a cry of patriotism based upon the legendary "Grito de Dolores" from the balcony of the National Palace, to a huge crowd in the mammoth plaza below, honoring the crucial and impulsive action that was the catalyst for the country's bloody struggle for independence from Spain. The following morning, on September 16, the day celebrated by Mexicans all over the world as their Independence Day, Mexico City is festive with the ringing of the bells of the National Palace; homes and buildings throughout the City are decorated with flags and banners; the sky is filled with brilliant fireworks displays; and a national military parade marches through the City into the main plaza. Smart Women Smart Money Conference

Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias will host a free financial literacy conference for women in the Chicago area on Wednesday, October 8 at the UIC Forum, 725 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago.

Giannoulias will give the keynote address on how to “Recession-Proof Your Finances.” Lynnette Khalfani-Cox, “The Money coach,” will give plenary remarks. Breakout session topics will include: Investing for the Long Term; Saving Green/Going Green; The Dream Job, the Dream Life; Teaching Children About Finances; How Your Business Decisions Impact Your Bank Financing Options; and Managing Your Debt.

Check-in for the free event will begin at 8 a.m. and the Smart Women Smart

It's not to late to file for your IRS Stimulus Rebate

How do you get it? Just file a federal tax return for 2007 by Oct. 15, 2008, even if you normally don't have to because your income usually doesn't meet the filing threshhold. Those who normally don't have to file a tax return and can use the short form for the stimulus payment can check out tax package 1040A-3 which has instructions, a sample Form 1040A and a blank Form 1040A — everything needed to file the tax form.

The IRS is not e-mailing or calling taxpayers about their stimulus payment. So if someone claiming to be from the IRS calls or e-mails you about the payments and asks you for a Social Security, bank account or credit card number or similar information, it's a scam.
