The Northshore is not immune to the current economic downturn. According to the Chicago Tribune unemployment rates have climbed from 3.5 percent to 6 percent in Northbrook and from 3.5 percent to 6.6 percent in Glenview over the last 12 months. To lend a helping hand and get local residents back to work, The North Suburban Career and Networking Center has opened its doors in nearby Northbrook.

The newly created job center provides assistance and structure to empower the area's unemployed by offering career assessment, job search planning, networking strategies, interviewing techniques, and resume critiques. It is affiliated with 40 area faith-based organizations and 30 employment/career centers in the area. An annual membership to the nonprofit career center of $95 includes reduced rates and preferred registraton at all events and workshops, a copy of the Networking and Job Search Guide publication, and bimonthly networking workshops. Nonmembers may attend workshops at a higher fee. July workshops are scheduled for Monday mornings from 10 am to noon; members $5 and non-members $15.

Mosquito Spraying July 8

The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) has informed the Village that it will be undertaking adult mosquito control operations (spraying adulticide) in parts of Glenview tonight, Wednesday, July 8, between 8 PM and 2 AM (weather permitting.) Here's a map of the specific area to be sprayed.

For general information about adulticiding, visit the Adulticiding Page at the NSMAD website (you'll have to scroll down to find information about today's spraying.) As is the case every summer, there have been a number of positive tests for the West Nile Virus throughout the northern suburbs.

For more information, call NSMAD at (847) 446-9434 -- and use caution in the early evening hours when mosquitoes are most prevalent.

Remember: we can all play a part in helping to reduce the mosquito population. In particular, empty water from garbage cans, buckets, kiddie swimming pools, bird baths, or pet bowls and make sure they're covered.
