Free Shredding Service at Glenview State Bank


Glenview State Bank will once again provide an opportunity for individuals to securely dispose of paper documents, canceled checks, files and other papers that are no longer required for personal records. Individuals may bring up to 25 lbs. of paper documents. Materials should be placed in paper bags or containers that can be returned to the owner, as plastic bags, etc. cannot be put in the shredding equipment. The second of four scheduled shredding days for 2009 will be Saturday, June 13, from 9:00 AM-Noon at the bank's Northbrook branch, 1707 Shermer Road. Drive-thru service will be provided with an industrial shredding truck on site.

Social Security One-Time Economic Recovery Payments Information

On May 7, 2009, the federal government issued the first economic recovery payments to people receiving Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. The payments are being issued on a staggered basis throughout the month of May. Please do not contact Social Security unless you have not received your payment by June 4, 2009. Additional information can be found in the FAQ section of the Social Security Administration site.

Glenview Farmer's Market Opening Day

June 27 is the first day of Glenview's 21 year old farmer's market, held at Historic Wagner Farm, 1510 Wagner Road in Glenview.

Be there on Saturdays, June 27 - October 10, from 8 am until noon for locally grown produce and artisan crafts. Visit the farm animals while you're there.

Illinois Emerging Writers Competition

The Illinois Emerging Writers Competition is a project of The Illinois Center for the Book

The purpose of the Competition is to promote creative writing, encourage local writers and provide a unique opportunity and outlet for recognizing new literary talent. Winners receive cash prizes and have their works submitted for review and possible publication in the Illinois literary magazines Another Chicago Magazine, Downstate Story, Ninth Letter and RHINO.

Competition is open to Illinois residents age 18 and over.

All entries must be original and unpublished. Persons who have previously
published a book are not eligible.

A poetry award and a short story award will be offered.

The deadline for submitting the application is June 30.

The Glenview Library Dropoff Point for Northfield Township Food Pantry



The Northfield Township Food Pantry is experiencing an increased need for non-perishable food items. Food may be dropped off at the Glenview Public Library, 1930 Glenview Road, during regular library hours, Monday-Friday 9-9, Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 1-5.
Especially needed are pastas and sauces; peanut butter and jelly; cereals; crackers; drinks; paper products;boxed dinners and mashed potatoes. Individual sizes are preferable.

Milwaukee Avenue Construction Update


The Illinois Tollway Authority has announced that one lane in each direction on Milwaukee Avenue will close at 7 a.m. on Friday, May 8 at the I-294 bridge for bridge work and pavement construction. The lane closure will remain in place through late summer. One lane in each direction will be maintained.

Swine Flu Update -Illinois Hotline Begins May 2

A new Illinois flu hotline begins operation today, May 2, to answer basic, non-medical questions related to the outbreak of the H1N1 virus (a.k.a Swine flu) in Illinois. The numbers are 866-848-2094 (English) and 866-241-2138 (Spanish). The lines will operate from 6 a.m.- 10 p.m. daily. There is also a new Illinois website http://www.ready.illinois.gov/ tracking flu-related issues.

Walk & Drive Safely - Operation Lifesaver


In May the Glenview Police Department will be out on the streets -- and on the railroad tracks -- working to increase pedestrian and driver safety.

Operation Lifesaver, which educates pedestrians about train track safety, will kick off on May 13 and 14 at the downtown train station. Then, on May 20 and 21, officers will create an "enforcement zone," ticketing walkers who cross the tracks illegally.

"Click it or Ticket" will take place over the Memorial Day weekend, May 24 and 25. Officers will be on the look-out for drivers who aren't wearing seat belts. So buckle up - and stay safe!
