Your Library Card is Also A Password

Did you know that your Glenview Public Library membership card is your password to online periodicals, e-books, language courses, computer skills tutorials, practice exams and you never have to check out a book to use these services? Simply go to the library's online resources page and enter the bar code number from your GPL library card when prompted for access to online publications in full text, downloadable audio books and much more.

Every day I see television commercials for online services that savvy library members know they can get for free with their library card from the Glenview Public Library's web site. If you are purchasing articles online, or paying for online subscriptions you are throwing money away and not using your library card to its full advantage. For example, and Heritage Quest is available for free from our Genealogy page if you want to trace your family tree. Legal forms are available from our subscription to Gale Legal Forms so why pay to use If you need to learn a language check out Mango for free online video language courses instead of purchasing Rosetta Stone discs. If you need a tutor for yourself or a student in your family, consider using Live Homework Help for instant online tutoring for grade level 4 up through junior college. Why pay for magazines and newspapers to read on your Kindle when many of the same publications are available from your library for free from Library Press Display on our News and Newspaper page, along with the Chicago Tribune Archive back to 1849 for historical research. For magazine articles we have online indexes and you can even set up a user alert in EBSCOhost or ProQuest to have each new issue sent to your email account as soon as it is published.

The library building is closed until October 9 but the library web site is open 24/7. For more information on how to use your library card as a password to online publications and how to use the library web site, register and attend the Google & Beyond workshop on November 1 in our new library technology lab.

Measure, Pack, Label

As anyone who has moved can tell you, it's a lot of work. Although our actual move doesn't officially begin until September 7, our moving company, Hallett Movers, is hard at work right now measuring and labelling the collection.

We will be closed from September 5 until October 9, but don't despair! Nearby libraries will honor your Glenview library card. Our book drops will be open. Our website will be available, as will our electronic databases and this blog. Join us for the Opening Day celebration from 1 to 5 on October 9!
