A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy by Sue Klebold

Cover image for A mother's reckoning : living in the aftermath of tragedyIn 1999, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed twelve students, a teacher, and themselves inside their affluent suburban high school. In Columbine’s aftermath, Dylan’s mother Sue spent years wracked with grief and haunted by the question it seemed the entire world was asking her – How could you let this happen? In her sensitive and compelling new memoir, Klebold looks back on the tragedy, illuminating her painful attempts to reconcile her memories of the affectionate, funny kid she raised with the legacy of horror and heartbreak he left behind. A Mother’s Reckoning might be a tough sell for squeamish readers; while the author takes great pains to eschew the lurid details of the killings, it is inherently painful to revisit such a dark chapter in American history. But this is ultimately a book about compassion and advocacy, one that honors all families touched by violence and suicide loss. In an age where school shootings have become depressingly commonplace, A Mother’s Reckoning is an important book; by shedding light on the warning signs she missed, Klebold may help to save other lives.
