Nonfiction Book Review

H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald
Macdonald isn't only interested in hawks. She also writes about contemporary Britain, and about T.H. White and his sad life. Macdonald explores his attempt to tame a goshawk, and contrasts it with her adventures doing the same thing. T.H. White overcame a terrible childhood, and hid his homosexuality at a time when that was the only option. Another strong theme is her father and his career as a photographer. Macdonald shares her experience of recovering from the death of her father, a strong supporter of her early interest in hawks. A wonderful memoir and lesson on taming hawks. - Iva Freeman
